Melanie Martinez was born on April 28, 1995 in the USA. She grew up listening to Brandy, Britney Spears, Shakira, The Beatles, Tupac Shakur, Biggie Smalls and Christina Aguilera and wanted to be a singer at a young age.
Martinez went to Plaza Elementary School, started writing poetry there and named her teacher Mr. Nadien as the person who taught her to sing. At the age of fourteen, Martinez learned to play the guitar himself by studying the chord diagrams of songs she found fun and active, and wrote her first song by adding one of the chord diagrams to her poem.
She gained fame in The Voice, an American voice contest. On April 22, 2014, she released the singles “Dollhouse” and “Carousel” from her debut EP Dollhouse. On August 14, 2015, she released her debut album Cry Baby.
