Karol G was born on February 14, 1991 in Colombia. She is the youngest of three siblings. At the age of fourteen, she appeared in the Colombian version of The X Factor. A few years after her performance on the show, she signed her first record contract with Flamingo Records (Colombia) & Diamond Music (Puerto Rico) and chose “Karol G” as her stage name. Shortly after, she performed at a quinceañera party with J Balvin. In the following years, she occasionally recorded and released songs such as “En La Playa” in 2006 and “Dime Que Si” in 2009. She studied music at Antioquia University and sang backup songs to other artists, including Reykon, who recorded the song “301” with her in 2012.
In January 2017, Karol G joined the Pequeños Gigantes USA real talent show as a judge and advised children ages 6 to 11 who performed on the show. In May of that year, her collaboration with Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny in “Ahora Me Llama” was considered her breakthrough hit. The song’s video has been viewed more than 756 million times on YouTube and reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. The song was described by NPR’s Marty Preciado as a bass-dominated, unrepentant anthem for the power of femininity that challenges hegemonic masculinity, sings about respect, love and sex.
The singer, who released the single “Secreto” with portuguese rapper Anuel AA in January 2019, described the romantic relationship between the two artists in the song’s video clip. The song peaked at number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number five on the US Hot Latin Songs charts.
Karol G met Puerto Rican rapper Anuel AA on the set of her song “Culpables” a month after her release from prison in August 2018. In January 2019, the couple confirmed their relationship. On April 25, 2019, Karol G arrived at the Billboard Latin Music Awards with a diamond wedding ring, and the couple was found to be engaged. In July 2020, Karol G’s test for COVID-19 was positive.
