Gwendoline Christie was born on 28 October 1978 in West Sussex, England, to a middle-class family. He has two older half-siblings. His mother is a housewife and his father worked in sales and marketing. He grew up in a village near South Downs. He studied gymnastics as a child, but started acting after a spinal cord injury. Around 2002 he worked in a boutique in Brighton. He graduated from Drama Center London in 2005. She was told that she “probably never could work” because of her unusually long physique, and even said “good luck” by her manager after she stated that she wanted to work on screen. She was inspired to continue this goal with Tilda Swinton’s performance in Orlando.
In 2002, Christie’s height caught the attention of photographer Polly Borland and made Christie the subject of a series of photographs called Bunny between 2002 and 2008. Christie’s mentor has been actor and writer Simon Callow since drama school. In July 2011, Christie played Brienne with Tarth in the second season of HBO’s fantasy TV series Game of Thrones. Her character, an unusually tall, muscular and simple-looking woman, is a favorite among many readers of the novels, and Christie was recommended by her fans for the role long before the auditions took place.
In 2015, Christie played Commander Lyme in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, the final film in the Hunger Games franchise. Actress Lily Rabe had previously signed for the role, but had to back down due to timing conflicts. Blackett joined the Swallows and Amazons roster that same year, but later left. Also in 2015, Christie starred in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as Captain Phasma, one of the film’s co-antagonists.
Christie is 1.91 meters tall. His height caused him to be bullied when he was young. She has been in a relationship with fashion designer Giles Deacon since the beginning of 2013.
