Danielle Brooks was born on September 17, 1989 in the USA. He grew up in South Carolina in a Christian family. His father was a deacon and his mother a priest. He started acting at the age of six in a birth play he gave for the church. During his last two years in high school, he attended the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities, a selective art high school. He studied drama at the Juilliard School and graduated in 2011.
After graduating from Juilliard, Brooks starred in two theatrical productions: The Servant of the Two Masters of the Shakespeare Theater Company and Blacken the Bubble. In 2013, she left both productions to join the cast of the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, a series about a women’s prison based on Piper Kerman’s memoir of the same name. Brooks played as Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson. It was originally intended to appear in only two episodes of the series, but also appeared in the remainder of the first season and subsequent seasons. Brooks’ performance on the series was appreciated by TV critics. In September 2013, Brooks starred in the season three episode of the HBO drama Girls, becoming the first African-American actress in the series.
On July 2, 2019, Brooks announced that she was pregnant with her first child. On November 16, 2019, Freeya gave birth to a girl named Carel Gellin.
