Chungha was born on February 9, 1996 in South Korea. She lived in Dallas, Texas for eight years before returning to South Korea to become a singer, so she can speak both English and Korean. She graduated from Sejong University dance department. She auditioned for YG Entertainment and was a JYP Entertainment trainee before joining her current agency, MNH Entertainment.
She prepared for three years before becoming a singer and started dancing with 6-7 years of dance training. She said that she would almost stop going to dance lessons after a point because of her economic difficulties. From January 22 to April 1, Kim represented MNH Entertainment on the girl group survival show Produce 101. She finished in fourth place and debuted on May 4 with the girl group IOI with the mini album Chrysalis.
