Mon Laferte was born on May 2, 1983 in Chile. He started his career at the age of 9 after winning the guitar at a song contest. At the age of 13 he received a scholarship to attend a music conservatory in Viña del Mar and soon began playing in bars in Valparaíso and Santiago. In 2003 he released his first studio album, La Chica de Rojo. The album was a great success in Chile and received Gold and Platinum certification. In 2007, Laferte moved from Chile to Mexico City in his musical career, singing in nightclubs and recording cover songs. In 2009, Laferte was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and his album was effectively terminated. During his battle with cancer, he abandoned the original stage name and introduced the world to Mon Laferte and said the name was a new beginning for him: “Mi cambio de nombre, you don’t ask any questions, you don’t do anything, you don’t find anyone else.”
